Sketchbook 1

To practice painting more loosley I set myslef the challenge of recreating my ‘3 monkey’s and a girl’ water colour painting, but in a much looser style this time (the result of this little challenge is the painting on the right). I was very pleased with the outcome and creating this painting confirmed my hunch that loosness and spontaneity is the element I have been missing in my creative practice. I was particularly excited about how the monkey’s came out, as well as the blue frame which I got the idea for from an Albert Lubaki painting, I also loved the tree at the top, and will be incorporating the placement of random objects in future paintings.

Although I liked the way I painted this girl much more than the first painting, I felt she was still not quite right, I’m also still unsure of exactly how I want to depict faces. I did like the wirey fingers and toes…

I adore how these mokey’s came out, with very basic shapes and without any features or many details, you can still instantly recognise that they are monkey’s, again bringing me back to this idea of painting essence.

The little monkey on the bottom was my favourite, I didn’t paint in any of his features, but the paint bled out in such away that it organicaly created a face for him.

I also painted some mermaids in a looser style; I liked the ‘flatness’ of the one in the corner and how her hands are stuck to her side, I also like how the paint bled on the one in the centre.

I also experiment with painting humans in unusual colours such as blue and grey, this little grey figure on the right corner, doesn’t neccessarily look that easily identifiable as a human, but I thought she looked quite fun.
