Asafo Appliqué
I created this little appliqué over the course of three days, and though it was a much longer process than painting, it took a lot less time than embroidery does, I also found the over all process alot more pleasent than embroidery. To create this applique, I sketched and cut out the figures, and shapes from a piece of calico cotton, I then painted them with acrylic paint, and used varois coloured thread to sew the painted figures and shapes onto a sheet of natural cotton fabric.
I looked at various photos of asafo flags for inspiration when making this applique. I noticed this image of a man wielding a sword whilst feeding an ambiguos beast a bone was depicted on several traditional Asafo flags, and I decided to make my own rendition.
I really liked the colour combinations of navy blue, mustard yellow/green, and little sprinkles of red yellow, and white.
An oil pastel sketch I made using the asafo applique as a reference.
