Wood Whittling: Street Preachers
Whist researching my chosen theme I was reminded of a classic trope- the street preacher, also known as the manic street preacher, also known by some as the bible basher with a megaphone. These people are often found in central parts of major cities, or in areas with a big African/Caribbean presence, in London that would be areas such as Brixton or Peckham. You can find them on any given day, bible in one hand megaphone in the other, often also toting some kind of hand made sign with a bible verse or a dooms day warning written on it. Though not exclusively, these street preachers are very often women of West African descent, making them perfect subjects to explore for my theme, and I felt instantly inspired to create something that could represent this familiar figure that so many of us recognise, but are also confused, perplexed, and often frustrated by.
